David Speller put on his own air show to take the honours at the first event of the inaugural Jersey Bodyboarders 4Season Bodyboard Series held at La Saline on the May bank holiday weekend.
The event was held in small 1-2ft surf, which made it hard work for all the competitors.
Strong early performances included Simon Watkins, starting the contest with a solid reverse 360, Peter Bolam, finding some nice lefts performing a series of spins, Dominic Alfano, surfing his best heat to date by stringing together a series of spinners and rolls, and birthday boy Eduardo Afonso who found plenty of good sections to boost some smooth rolls.
With the small waves and the threat of deteriorating conditions with the turning tide, the decision was made to cancel running two semi-finals and a final, and run just one extended 6 man final instead.
The final was therefore fought out between Speller, Afonso, Bolam, Alfano and Father and son Gary and Phil Le Neveu. It was Phil who was to set the pace, pulling two spins and a tidy roll early on. This was followed up with another wave with a good solid roll. Gary steadily picked off some good waves himself too, with some nice spins for the conditions. Afonso put in all the manoeuvres he could, but couldn’t quite find the better set waves he needed to raise his scoring potential.
As the heat drew to a close, it was current under 18’s British champion Speller who put on his late air show to take the win. Firstly, boosting a big air roll, followed by a big back-flip attempt which was almost completed. To round off the final, he launched a completely airborne air roll in the shore break.
