James Manners has won the summer event of the Jersey Bodyboarders 4Season Series, held in small waves at La Saline on Sunday morning.
Manners, who has just returned from a year long trip bodyboarding around the World, surfed powerfully to beat of the challenge from Scott Harben, who was making his return to bodyboarding competition after a few years absence.
The event got underway in 2ft surf on the very high morning tide. A typically strong La Saline rip was running south to north through the contest area, which made fitness key to staying in position for the better waves.
The first of the semi finals was fought out between Colin Crowther, Eduardo Afonso, Steve McPhee and Steve Pinzari. Good roll and spin combinations from Crowther and Afonso gave them first and second places respectively, to advance through to the final, ahead of drop-knee specialist McPhee in 3rd and Pinzari in 4th.
Manners made a great start to semi two, with a long right hander, pulling two spins and a powerful roll on the inside section. A high scoring second wave was enough to give him the heat win. Harben took second spot, despite a late challenge from Andy de la Mare, who finished the heat strong with a powerful reverse re-entry, and two good rolls on the inside section. 4th and 5th spot went to South African James Thompson and junior Dan Garton, who both gave up battling the rip and opted to ride the back-wash.
The final was a well fought out heat, with the finalists all working hard to stay in position; this involved at times sprinting back down the beach.
Manners highest scoring wave included a reverse spin, followed by a down the line roll, with a further roll on the inside. This wave was backed-up by a second high scorer, which included two reverses and a roll. This was enough to give Manners the win, just beating Harben, who found two good left-handers, performing a double spin and a roll on the first, and a spin, roll, reverse combination on the second.
Crowther, with two forwards and an inside roll on a right-hander and a reverse and roll on a left, did just enough to take 3rd spot ahead of Afonso in 4th.
