Report

David Speller and Clint Loake were the winners at the last event of the 2009/10 4Season Series, the annual 2010 Cold Water Challenge, held by the Jersey Bodyboarders, at Petit Port reef, Corbiere.

Speller, winner of the Open division at the recent Soundwave Channel Island championships, needed a big result to be in with a chance of winning the overall series, and he did all he could, winning this final event in style. However, after adjustments were made to the ratings to reflect each competitors best 3 results from 4 events, a 4th place finish by Loake was enough to give Loake the overall series title.

Despite slightly milder conditions then of late, the competition lived up to its name, taking place in 7 degree water, and strong cross-offshore winds. Nevertheless, there was a good swell hitting the shallow reef, with powerful 3ft sets rolling through.

Due to the low sea temperature, the contest was run in a format which meant each competitor would only surf one long heat, with their highest 2 scoring waves counting as their total score.

Heat 1, saw heat favourite Loake drawn against Gary Le Neveu and series leader Andy de la Mare, who went into this event on 2703 points, only a slender 3 points ahead of Loake. Loake surfed a steady heat, without finding any suitable sections on the waves to launch any of his usual big moves. He did perform some good spin combinations though, including one wave with a solid reverse followed by a forward spin, which ended up with a trip over the inside rocks, luckily just escaping with a shin scrape.

De la Mare, determined to hold onto his series lead, surfed an excellent heat, scoring highly following one hollow barrel on the inside reef, followed by a deep carving reverse 360 over the rocks. A good second scoring wave gave de la Mare the highest heat tally with 11.83 points (out of 20), ahead of Loake with 10.83 and Le Neveu 3.5.

Heat 2 was fought out between Speller, Steve McPhee and Seb Bonnier. McPhee had some good rides, mostly whilst up in his favoured drop-knee stance, whilst Bonnier found some good long left-handers peeling down the other side of the reef. It was Speller though who was to steal the show, launching a huge air roll on a left-hander, posting an average 8.33 from the judges. Final heat scores were Speller with 13.83, Bonnier 5.5 and McPhee 5.33.

The final heat was contested between Colin Crowther, Steve Pinzari and Eduardo Afonso. Channel Island Senior and Masters champion Crowther found some of the better set waves, starting the heat with two reverses on a left-hander followed by a forward spin over the shallow inside section on a right, for a heat score of 10.33.

Afonso opted to sit further inside over the shallowest section of reef, performing some good solid rolls and spins to post some solid scores, totalling 11 points for the heat.

Pinzari taking a gamble and surfing the contest on a board he was not familiar with, finished the heat with 7 points, his highest scoring ride including a cut-back and spin.
